Sarah & James’ Picture Preview: A Prohibition Vintage themed Wedding at Temple Events Center in Denver, CO
Sarah & James wanted to do something unique & different for their wedding day, and with a 1920’s Vintage themed wedding, they certainly got what they wished for! Feather hairpieces, 1920’s costumes, Grandma in a glittery flapper gown, home-brewed beer in the antique bathtub, beautiful burlesque feather dancer named Vivienne VaVoom!…..can I keep going?
The terrarium centerpieces filled with stones,moss, & live plants. Sarah’s bold red hair twisted into unique knot formations. Her lace vintage shoes to match the dress designed by Pronovias from Blue Bridal. The sparkling broach. The cabbage (yes, cabbage) & plum purple rose bouquets by Kelly Carlson Designs. The energy and excitement dancing through a hot night…it truly was an amazing & unique wedding!
Sarah was calm & collected when I got to her home. All the ladies, including mom & grandma, were looking spectacular in their vintage & flapper inspired dresses. Pastor Gil Jones helped create quite the moving and emotional ceremony at Temple Events Center, also known as Pathways Church. Lots of people came out to witness their marriage, including their family, closest friends, and even man’s best friend- their dog!
For the reception there were lots of tasty options, with catering from Culinary Wave, Sweet Action Ice Cream for extra dessert, and even wedding cake beer, made by the groom himself! The bride’s mom made the delicious wedding cake, topped with fresh picked lavender. When it came time to dance, things really got entertaining! DJ’s Starr and Matthias provided the dance music, and even encouraged the bride & groom to sing a song together. And at the end of the night Sarah led a huge Congo line, and everyone (well except perhaps the DJs & I), but even the caterers joined in!
And in case you were wondering the 1920’s inspiration was not just a wedding theme, its an era they are truly passionate about. For their engagement shoot we stayed with the prohibition theme and did their “engagement date” at Green Russell bar in downtown Denver. Below: The bride & groom recently bought a house together in the Baker neighborhood of Denver, which made a great place to start pictures. The bride’s wedding dress from Blue Bridal was a perfect fit for her 1920’s wedding theme. Her bridesmaids helped her in her dress, then wait outside as the bride exists the house right before we leave for the wedding ceremony.
Above: It was an emotional ride through the moving ceremony held at Temple Events Center, also known as Pathways Church in downtown Denver. Below: I love finding unique funky spots for pictures that most wedding photographers would probably just walk by. The old metal stairs on the side of the Temple Events Center made a fun spot for portraits that were a little different then the rest. If I could have figured out how to lower the ladder I would have asked them to jump up….but then again some things are best saved for the Trash the Dress sessions.

Below: I loved all the unique decor pieces, especially the plant potted in antique glass vases, and all the tiny samplings of green moss found everywhere, including on the cake table, centerpieces, and even in the bridesmaids’ jewelry.
Above: James brews his own beer so in the spirit of the Prohibition Era they filled up an antique bathtub with his home brew. They also had antique Coke bottles (a perfect holder for their custom rings), a vintage candy bar, and lots of candles & natural decor. Below: Sarah’s mom made the wedding cake seen below herself. It was topped with fresh lavender and suited their homemade theme well….not to mention was delicious!
Above: Sarah & James kept adding all kinds of unique twists to their wedding day. They hired a beautiful blonde burlesque dancer to do a feather fan dance. Everyone, including the wait staff, jumped on board for the congo line. Everyone was having such a blast, I think I was literally the only one that didn’t jump in. The mirrors, in the reception room of the Temple Events Center, made for some fun reflections!
Below: At the end of the night I pulled Sarah & James away momentarily for a picture in the chapel, or theater of the Events Center. I love these old red theater chairs and knew I had to take advantage of the now empty room. And I think the bride & groom were happy to take a momentary break, throw their feet up, lean back, and take in the whole moment. This one moment really lasted only a couple of minutes, then it was right back downstairs for much more dancing & fun! But at least these pictures they can hold onto forever.
My team and I had a great time photographing this wedding….after all its quite rare to get to step back about 90 years into the past for a wedding! With the antique 1920’s inspired style, it only seemed fitting that I use a lot of my vintage filters & borders on these images. I’m having so much fun going through these pictures, not only are there some really cool artistic photos, but HILARIOUS ones as well….some much too embarrassing for this blog, that I may have share privately with the bride & groom, haha, just laughing thinking about them!
