For anyone out there that regularly reads my blog, you may recognize Molly from her Day of the Dead Victorian Carnival themed wedding last year. As a tattoo artist Molly is extremely creative in more ways then one. And she has taken on a new artistic outlet- costume making. When Molly approached me wanting to do a photo shoot in her homemade black latex catwoman suit I couldn’t be more excited! A lot of brides whose weddings I photograph do a boudoir photo shoot, but this was definitely different then bedroom lingerie….yet just as sexy, and just as fun! If you’re not yet familiar with Cosplay – the dressing up and pretending to be a fictional character (usually a sci-fi, comic book, or anime character), then I hope these pictures will inspire you to consider your own inner-character.

We started pictures at my small home studio, but then took off around the city for a variety of unique locations perfect for catwoman.

The week before Molly’s Cosplay photo shoot I started searching around downtown Denver to find the best locations for these unique pictures. I found an abandoned school in my own Denver neighborhood for the day pictures and waited for night fall to search out the warehouse district to find the coolest textures and most dramatic lighting for the night pictures.

Sometimes you just get lucky….like when you catch a car’s headlights in your picture. Don’t worry, I had my assistant watching our backs to make sure we didn’t get hit, safety first!

This graffiti wall also wasn’t planned, but when we spotted it driving to our next location, we knew we had to stop for pictures here too. The colorful playful devilish graffiti was a great contrast to Molly’s black cat woman costume.

Kudos to Molly for creating this amazing catwoman costume, and for her bravery in walking around the city for these pictures. Not everyone could do that, but that is one great thing about getting in costume…you are suddenly transformed into someone else, and can be whomever you want to be, even if just temporarily. Molly certainly got a few cat calls, and wide eyed stares, but it was fun to make people smile. After all its not every day you see catwoman climbing buildings in your neighborhood.

I certainly have found a new photography passion – photographing people in costumes! If you’re going to spend so much time and energy on creating an amazing costume, why not prance around town in character, show it off, and get incredible pictures while you are it!

I love shooting at night in the city. The grungy urban decay, the collapsing metal fence, the harsh dramatic street lights….all add to the drama of this unique cosplay photo shoot!

We spent a good three hours running around town setting up lights and getting into character for all these unique locations, but it was well worth it, and lots of fun! We’re already planning her next photo shoot as Molly is crafting together her next costume- Poison Ivy!
